Obstacles to and opportunities for palliative medical care for marginalised people - a care ethics perspective

In the course of her master's thesis, Jessica Dyna Stöger was interested in finding out why access to adequate palliative care is more difficult for marginalised people. Qualitative interviews were conducted with physicians, qualified nurses and social workers to shed light on the barriers to admission to a tertiary centre (palliative care unit, hospice). On the one hand, there are experts in palliative care, on the other hand, there are experts in the care of marginalised people. Through the qualitative study, contacts were established that already take into account valuable (time) resources in the course of caring for marginalised palliative patients. By writing the master's thesis, contacts were established with physicians, nurses and social workers who mainly deal with marginalised people. It was possible to raise awareness of the special needs of patients in a palliative setting. This should also provide those affected with easier access to adequate palliative care in the future.

The effect of our efforts will be researched in the future with another qualitative study. Namely, whether the special needs of our patients could be adequately met AND whether the palliative care team is up to these challenges without developing a loss of quality of life that could have a negative impact on the doctor-patient relationship.
