Stefanie's work focuses on modelling dynamics and behaviour of microbial communities using their structure-function map. She studies how emergent functional dynamics at the community level arise from the interactions of the single constituents. A major interest lies in the lung microbiome and how its dynamics can be managed in medical context such as in cystic fibrosis and other chronic lung diseases. Her work also links to other biological communities in particular transcription factors and regulatory motifs in cell type development and evolution. After receiving her PhD the University of Vienna with Prof. Peter Schuster, she joined the Ricard Sole's Complex Systems Lab in Barcelona. As a Junior Group Leader (Univ. Ass.) at the Division for Computational Systems Biology at the University of Vienna she developed her work on microbial communities. Stefanie Widder joined the Knapp lab in 2016 where she currently works on the interplay of lung cellular immunology and the microbiome.
