The Intensive Care Unit 13i2 nursing team sees itself as an integral part of the interdisciplinary care team at University Hospital Vienna’s Department of Medicine I. For us, people are at the centre of our work.

In line with the University Hospital Vienna mission statement of putting People First, we are fully committed to implementing a comprehensive treatment concept for all of the patients in our care, and also see our roles as providing a vital link between patients, relatives and medical staff. Physical, mental and psychosocial issues are given equal weighting in the overarching treatment concepts.

When it comes to all of the workflows, guidelines and processes in place in the Unit, transparency is paramount – with all procedures clearly mapped out in our quality management (QM) system. Intensive Care Unit 13i2 been certified in accordance with EN ISO 9001 since 2006.

It is categorised as a level 3 intensive care unit in accordance with the Austrian Health Care Structure Plan (ÖSG). Qualified nursing staff are available for a total of 1,250 hours per week.

Maintaining and continuously building on the outstanding professional standards in place at our Unit is very important to us. We achieve this in numerous ways, including through structured onboarding measures for new colleagues. Members of the nursing team also undergo continuous training and education to ensure that the latest evidence-based, scientific nursing findings are integrated into their daily work as a matter of course.

The additional roles performed by our care team are:

  • Pain manager
  • Wound manager
  • Delirium officer
  • Hygiene officer(s)
  • Quality manager
  • Risk manager
  • Safety officer

Various employee-related, academic training programmes complete the picture.

High-level technical expertise is also passed on to members of our nursing team on an ongoing basis as part of our training mandate, which guarantees supervision of trainees by qualified practical instructors and a professional nursing team.

We see our work as providing holistic, individualised care for patients and their relatives, with the aim of achieving a high level of satisfaction for all involved. To help us achieve this, we make sure that we plan and coordinate care programmes with the patient and the multi-professional team. Professionalism, trust, mutual respect and appreciation shape the way that we communicate and work together at the Unit.

It bears repeating that all of the workflows, guidelines and processes in place in the Unit are transparent and clearly mapped out in our quality management (QM) system. Intensive Care Unit 13i2 has been certified in accordance with ÖNORM EN ISO 9001 since 2006.

High-level technical expertise is also passed on to members of our nursing team on an ongoing basis as part of our training mandate. Supervision of trainees by qualified practical instructors, a range of lectures and publications at home and abroad underscore this approach.
