Acute respiratory failure can progress rapidly. Patients who require an invasive therapy procedure (e.g. ECMO, ECCO2-R) can benefit from being transferred to a specialised centre.
Transfers are highly complex from both a logistical and medical perspective and can have a significant impact on the patient’s prognosis. If you consider center admission, please contact Intensive Care Unit 13i2 on the telephone number provided below as early as possible. We will discuss the case in detail and evaluate the individual transfer options with you. We use a standardised patient evaluation sheet to assess ECMO eligibility. For your information, it is available here for download.
If a transfer is indicated, we will go through the organisational options available to us and plan the exact procedure. In cases that meet our eligibility criteria, an ECMO retrieval may be considered (visit by an ICU 13i2 team, ECMO cannulation in your department, accompanied transfer to us).
When the decision to retrieve the patient is made, an information sheet is sent to you prior to our approach. Also, you can download it here.
