Mission Statement

The Division of Hematology and Hemostaseology at the Medical University of Vienna is located in the Vienna General Hospital and is a leading center in Europe.

Our primary goal is to provide patients with the highest quality care aligned with the latest medical standards. Through our extensive research activities, we offer access to cutting-edge diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, often as part of international scientific study programs.

Our center is integrated into a strong scientific environment at our university and in the international scientific community. Thanks to these collaborations, our study groups and experts are able to offer access to state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic approaches as well as numerous clinical studies. Our department is ISO 9001:2015 certified and is subject to continuous quality control through regular internal and external evaluations as well as several internal and external validation projects.

Our department is a leading teaching and training center for M.D. and Ph.D. students, postdocs and other academic staff and is also part of the Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC) of the Medical University of Vienna and the Vienna General Hospital (AKH). Our teams are involved in numerous national and international academic networks and clinical study groups, some of which are led by members of our center. Members of our center also coordinate and lead a number of national and international research clusters and institutes, including the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Hematology and Oncology (Chair: Prof. P. Valent).

Our research teams and specialist physicians: Our research teams and specialists focus on various disease models, including hereditary and acquired forms of cytopenia, acute and chronic leukemias, Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, myelodysplastic and myeloproliferative neoplasms, amyloidosis, multiple myeloma, aplastic anemia and PNH, mastocytosis, eosinophilic disorders, histiocytosis, blood coagulation disorders including hemophilia, as well as venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. In addition, our department conducts special scientific programs in the areas of immunotherapy, gene therapy, leukemic stem cells, cell therapies, psycho-oncology, precision medicine and telemedicine.

The overarching goal of our experimental and translational research efforts is to improve the management, therapy, survival and quality of life of patients with malignant and non-malignant blood cell diseases as well as patients with coagulation disorders and thromboembolic diseases.
