Philipp B. Staber is Associate Professor, Head of the Lymphoproliferative Diseases Program and Senior Physician at the Department of Haematology and Haemostaseology at the Medical University of Vienna. After obtaining his doctorate, Dr. Philipp Staber worked as a junior doctor in internal medicine at the Medical University of Graz. He completed his doctorate in Graz and at Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, USA. From 2009 to 2013, he practiced a postdoctoral research fellowship at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute and the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center of Harvard Medical School. He completed his fellowship in hematology and oncology at the Medical University of Graz and the Medical University of Vienna.
In the last 7 years at the Medical University of Vienna, Dr. Philipp Staber built up his own research laboratory with currently 14 members, published several papers in renowned journals and raised more than 6 million euros in research funding. The group established a comprehensive, clinically annotated biobank for hematologic malignancies (viable biobank, "Vivi-bank"), which includes more than 15,000 viable primary patient samples of leukemias and lymphomas, as well as a platform for single-cell drug screening.
Through interdisciplinary collaboration, the generation of structured clinical, functional and high-dimensional data sets in combination with deep machine learning, the group aims to improve the molecular understanding of patients' individual hematologic malignancies and their precise therapeutic targeting. With his clinical research group, he develops and conducts patient-oriented "next generation clinical trials" to evaluate individualized therapeutic strategies and precision medicine approaches in patients with hematologic malignancies.
