Palliative medicine or palliative care is the multi-professional care of seriously ill patients with advanced disease for whom cure is no longer possible. It addresses not only their physical symptoms, but also their psychological, social and spiritual needs. Through the integration of the Division of Palliative Medicine into the Department of Internal Medicine I with its focus on haematology, oncology and infectious diseases, the majority, but not all, of the patients with palliative care needs that are treated, live with cancer. The Division of Palliative Medicine at the Department of Internal Medicine I also runs an "Outpatient Clinic for Palliative Medicine and symptom-oriented Therapy", which can only be visited by appointment.
