Our outpatient clinic is located on the Palliative Care Unit 17K and is open once a week for patients with palliative care needs. The symptoms and concerns of seriously ill patients can be many and varied and often exceed the time available in a normal outpatient situation. For this reason, we offer a palliative care outpatient clinic on our ward. An appointment is required for an outpatient visit so that the palliative care team can get an overview of the patient's individual situation.
During a detailed discussion, symptoms are recorded and the patient (and family if they wish) are informed about palliative care options. Outpatient symptom management (e.g. pain management) can then begin.
Providing palliative care as early as possible has been shown to be of great benefit to patients and their families and to improve the quality of life for all concerned. Patients can be referred to our outpatient clinic for early palliative care at the time of diagnosis of terminal illness (even if treatment is still ongoing and initially aimed at cure).
