Our outpatient clinic is located in the Palliative Care Unit 17K and is open once a week for patients with palliative care needs. It is mandatory that one of your treating physicians contacts our palliative care team in advance, so that we can get some preliminary information about your individual situation. The symptoms and concerns of critically ill patients can be diverse and often exceed the time frame available in a standard outpatient setting. For this reason, we offer a palliative care outpatient clinic.
A detailed interview is held to assess symptoms and explain palliative care options to the patient (and their family, if they wish). Outpatient symptom management (e.g. pain management) can then be initiated.
Early access to palliative care has been shown to be of great benefit to patients and their families, improving the quality of life for all concerned. Patients can be referred to our outpatient palliative care clinic as soon as they are diagnosed with an incurable illness (even if they are still receiving curative treatment).
